Check out "Bohème 01 - Scala 1979 - Che gelida manina" - here he sings it in the original key. And you what? Puccini knew what he was doing. It is sweeter and more romantic. The lower key is ever som much more melancholy. It would be best to sing in the original key and leave out the high C, if the singer doesn't have it, and sing Puccini's written lower D. But this will never happen.

Both Caruso and Pavarotti took it down a half step and sing a high B at the end. Pavarotti sings it in the orig key in his recording with Karajan though, I believe.

Manch einer wird mich dafür hassen, wenn ich sage, dass ich Pavarottis Stimme schöner finde als die von Caruso.Aber..ich finde Pavarotti ist der wundervollste, begabteste und beste Sänger, den die Welt bis jetzt gesehen hat.Nicht nur in 100 Jahren, sondern in 1000.
