I think some of Bressons later films were percieved as quite pretentious and boring by some critics but Tarkovsky's work is usually very slow and has also been described as pretentious. I suppose since Tarkovsky is Russian and was then a so-called 'oppressed' artist the critics were already sympathetic to that since Nostalghia has that sense of longing for home, spiritually or otherwise. the French always have very contrived political correctness stances in regards to art.

was Bresson's film not as well recieved as Tarkovsky's? You can hear the audience simply applaud when Tarkovsky is announced but when Bresson first arrived the audience all started roaring and hooting and I think you can hear some boos.

I don't think Welles purposely avoided Bresson's hand... I think he was just too caught up in memorizing his next sentence in French!Although it's wonderful to see these three geniuses together, it pains me to see that the pretentiousness of Cannes and the stuffiness of the crowd had such an influence on them that day. In all other interviews, documentaries, etc., they are most pleasant people...
